Over the years, electricity meters have evolved from electro-mechanical meters to AMR meters to smart meters. In a smarter and connected world, the electricity meter is becoming a part of a connected system which improves delivery efficiency of the utility and enables them to provide better services to consumers. Overall, the meters have become more intelligent and more complex.

Looking at the business benefits these complex systems can deliver, utilities worldwide have plans to spend megabucks to change the installed base to smart meters. The expected life of the product on circuit is 15 years 24 x 7. Over this duration, the cost of failure of a product is not just the cost of the product but a host of other costs and issues which come with replacement like installation cost, billing based on average or estimated usage, updates to database, visit to consumer premises, disposal costs etc. If we take all the above into account, reliability becomes an imperative can only be ensured by designing for reliability.
