What is the business case for retrofitting substations to IEC 61850 compliance? Just ask Stedin, a major gas and electricity distribution system operator in the Netherlands.
By automating its substations and receiving real-time data, Stedin spotted that tap changers were switching 30 times per day instead of the optimal 16. As it turned out, trains accelerating at a nearby station were the cause of the energy peaks.
This example of optimising operational assets was one motivation behind Stedin retrofitting its 185 substations in line with IEC 61850, an international communication protocol for substation automation.
In this webinar, you will hear more about why Stedin is digitising 21,000 devices across its substation network, some of which have been in the field for 40 years.
Along with the business motivation, the webinar will also explore how the DSO deployed the project.
Digitising substation assets like transformers and switchgear is one thing, but it’s another to make sure that this data feeds into an enterprise-wide view of operations. This is where OSIsoft supported the project - by developing a connector for data platform PI System.
The custom-built PI Connector for IEC 61850 links to Stedin’s existing PI System ensuring that it can visualise and act on real-time substation data.
To gain the real-time insights needed from its 61850-compliant substations and reach performance goals, Stedin needed to connect its substations directly to the PI System.
Grid Strategist at Stedin Anne van der Molen explains: “You’re only as good as the information you’re getting from your SCADA historian. And, if you want to change that, you need to change basically the interface from the substations or the equipment in the field to your SCADA.”
Register for this webinar and you will learn:
- Stedin’s objectives for digitising its substations
- How the DSO connected its digitised assets to a data platform
- Examples of using real-time data to achieve operational value
