A pathway towards smart grids through an open IEC based software architecture

Richard Haagensen presents a number of valuable ideas on how the utility industry can prepare for smart grids. Taking a deeper focus on the issues of standardisation, he warns of the need to change the current business model in the utility sector. Transparency and data driven decisions are both considered as vital factors in the development of a smart grid generation.

Discussing the IEC solution architecture software, ‘the software of the future solves the challenges of today,’ Haagensen voices considerations for the software’s effective implantation as well how to ensure end-to-end interoperability by choosing the correct standards.
