Case Study: Deploying a Scalable, Multi-vendor Smart Metering Infrastructure while Ensuring Operational Excellence

Broadcast Date: Tue 27 Sep 13:00 UTC

This webinar will address the challenges faced by Iberdrola when designing, deploying and putting in operation its Prime-based smart metering solution to manage more than 11 million smart meters.

The implementation of a new management system for ongoing deployment of massive smart metering infrastructures is a huge challenge for utilities. They must ensure that the replacement of legacy systems does not impact existing metering operations, and that new systems are capable of providing the highest performance rates and new services.

In early 2014, Iberdrola decided to deploy a new IT platform to manage its Prime-based smart metering solution to manage more than 11 million smart meters, alongside almost 2 million LV advanced supervision devices.

This webinar addresses the challenges faced by Iberdrola when designing, deploying and putting in operation such a complex IT platform. On one hand, managing enormous amounts of data generated by such a huge smart metering infrastructure, and, on the other hand, to not impact day-to-day operation of the existing infrastructure while adding 7 million devices at the switchover.

This session will answer questions such as:

  • Scalability, interoperability and performance in service delivery
  • Technical and organizational solution applied
  • Added values provided by the applied solution, in the form of advanced services

Project case study - Scoping the perfect End to End smart meter roll out

Broadcast Date: Fri 30 Sep 13:00 UTC

How do you select the right end to end metering solution which meets and aligns to your business objectives? Get a sense of why smart metering is particularly relevant now and what the main policy and market drivers are and how they stack up against utility opportunities and benefit to the end consumer.

Moving beyond the government push with legislation and incentives, utilities are increasingly seeing the potential benefits of investing in smart meters, particularly on the operational side of the business. But how do you select the right end to end solution which meets and aligns with your objectives?

Our experts will discuss how they went about picking the right solutions having investigated key issues including and not limited to;

  • The main pain points for the utility in smart meter rollouts
  • Choosing between Turn-key and Piecemeal approach
  • How to integrate legacy and future systems
  • Balancing OPEX, CAPEX & TCO (counting the cost)

Attendees will also will get an overview of smart metering in a specific region including a sense of why smart metering is particularly relevant now and what the main drivers are. Balancing Policy and Market drivers against utility opportunities and benefit to the end consumers.

The smart metering space has seen steady progress in the last 6 years but where is the technology heading? The sector is changing and whilst billing and theft prevention are the low hanging fruit, smart metering is delivering benefits beyond the grid edge including into consumer domains.

What are the latest technologies and where are we seeing innovation in smart metering? How will advanced meter infrastructure cope with the big data paradigm? Where is the intersection between smart metering and smart cities?

In this session our panel of experts will discuss three key areas in smart metering;

  • Data management and analytics
  • Standards for system and device Interoperability
  • AMI connectivity and smart meter gateways

Attendees will gain a sense of the next generation of smart metering solutions.

Accommodating Growing Diversity Within Meter Networks

Broadcast Date: Thu 13 Oct 12:00 UTC

A reference case explaining (the implications for) the utility’s IT infrastructure of the future

  • Ferry Cserép

    CEO & Co-Founder

A Dutch reference case explaining the utility’s IT infrastructure of the future.

In a country where its smart meter roll out is in full swing, one of the lessons learned by Dutch utilities is that smart metering is not (only) about the meter itself.

Sure, one needs cutting edge hardware technology when it comes to generating high quality data. Standards, business requirements and security needs keep evolving at high speed. For example in the Netherlands, we are now starting the roll-out of the 5th major iteration of our Dutch Smart Meter Requirements (SMR 5), while we still have meters from the previous DSMR2 and DSMR4 standards in the network.

As a result of this unstoppable hardware evolution, the real challenge for a utility is “How to accommodate this (ever) growing diversity within my meter network?”. In this webinar we share answers from a system perspective, using Dutch grid operator Alliander’s head end infrastructure solution as a reference case.

Join this webinar and learn more about:

  • The impact of ever evolving standards and changing (communication) technologies / requirements on your the roll-out
  • From a system perspective, how to manage an asset base consisting of meter hardware that varies extensively when it comes to types of devices or brands, communication technologies or, over time, firmware updates (due to evolving standards and security requirements)?
  • The result of a 20 year partnership with Alliander: the creation of a seamless network infrastructure ensuring future flexibility without increasing system complexity and operational costs

How Analytics Helps National Grid Make Better Decisions to Manage an Ageing Network

Broadcast Date: Fri 14 Oct 13:00 UTC

Learn how National Grid accelerated analytics from proof-of-concept project to improving enterprise decision making.

  • David Salisbury

    Head of Network Engineering
  • Neil Barry

    Senior Sales Director

National Grid manages 7,700 km of gas transmission lines in the UK, 40 percent of which is at least 40 years old. Clearly, those ageing portions of the network can’t and won’t all be replaced at once. How does National Grid use analytics to prioritize work to optimize spending, labour, and risk reduction while minimizing interruptions to service?

Luckily, pipes are like people—not all 40-year-olds are the same. They age at different rates based on maintenance, environmental conditions, operating stress and other variables.

National Grid now uses analytics and visualisation across silos of data through the company to give business users greater visibility into the condition of transmission assets, including where corrosion issues are more likely to prematurely age pipes, valves and other assets. This visibility into the true state of the network speeds decision making and ensures correct prioritisation of maintenance, repair and replacement work. It also provides a stronger evidence base for the next business plan.

In this webinar, National Grid Head of Network Engineering David Salisbury and Neil Barry of SpaceTime will describe how National Grid accelerated analytics from proof-of-concept project to improving enterprise decision making. Those improved decisions are changing how National Grid plans for and maintains the system.

Attendees will understand how they can gain similar results from applying next-generation analytics to their utility assets for tasks ranging from planning the next day’s repairs to deciding the next decade’s investments.
