Digitalisation and interconnection of energy infrastructure has become a fundamental process for building and managing smart grids. To provide new services and enhance operational efficiency, new and complex data systems must be optimised. Beyond the cost-savings and efficiency gains that this technology provides however, it also brings increased vulnerability in terms of cybersecurity and (data-) privacy risks. A new paradigm is needed to respond to this mission-critical security challenge.
Various attacks on critical infrastructures that have been launched in recent years, underline the importance of integration of security and privacy mechanisms in smart grid environments. The risk is perhaps higher now than at anytime in history. Not only would blackouts and outages disrupt millions of customers but medical care and emergency services for example, putting many lives at risk. Beyond the infrastructure threat, the huge amount of customer data being collected represents a whole other range of threats.
Beyond the operational challenge, Prof. Dr. Jörg Lässig will also explain the legal frameworks and regulations in EU countries concerning privacy for smart systems in the energy sector. Patrick Aichroth will give an introduction to some privacy enhancing technologies as applied by Fraunhofer IDMT, which may help to establish trust within the smart energy market.
