This year's DistribuTECH, a leading utility industry event focused on power distribution, covered many hot topics in the global utility industry -- automation and control systems, energy efficiency, demand response, renewable energy integration, smart metering, grid operations and reliability, power delivery equipment, commercial and industrial energy management technology and water utility technology.
An overarching theme that emerged from this conference was the importance and ubiquity of data analytics. Usman Sindhu, Siemens Senior Product Marketing Specialist, reflects on six reasons why utility professionals should care about data analytics.
Several DistribuTECH sessions included Siemens experts as speakers. Some have co-authored papers which are published in the DistribuTECH 2014 proceedings, available to conference attendees.
Video interviews with key Siemens personnel and clients at DistribuTECH:
Lisa Caswell, president of eMeter, a Siemens business: Finding the right smart grid "on ramp" for your utility.
Krishan Gupta, Director of Product Management for eMeter: Using Analytics to put smart grid data to work
Debjit Mukerji, Director of Venture Technology at Siemens Technology to Business: Bringing tech startups and utilities together
Don Bowman, Manager of Engineering for Wake Electric: Enhancing rural smart grid communication with WiMAX
Bruno Opitsch, Key Expert for Distribution/Feeder Automation, Siemens Smart Grid, discusses a smart grid monitoring pilot project in Wachtendonk, Germany.
Hugo Bashualo, Senior Manager at Siemens Power Technologies International: Why and how power distribution planning must change
Joerg Freitag, General Manager, Ruggedcom, a Siemens business: Proven utility communications for harsh environments
Roy Moxley, Siemens Power Systems Protection Consultant: How relay data speeds fault location, power restoration
Marc Lao, Siemens Product Manager: Preventing power outages with Fusesaver
Andre Smit, Siemens Product Development Manager: Learning from utility communication system failure
John Cooper, Siemens Management Consultant: Why business transformation is this year's crucial utility challenge
The Siemens booth (#1647) offered live demonstrations of how smart grid technology helps utilities address real-world problems, such as how to respond to outages during severe weather.
Key topics at the Siemens booth were:
- Spectrum Power ADMS. This advanced distribution management system can help North American utilities monitor and manage their distribution networks better than ever before. See Spectrum Power ADMS press release.
- EnergyIP Grid Application Platform, from eMeter, a Siemens Business. A recent Gartner Group "Magic Quadrant" report named eMeter a leader in the meter data management industry. Two new EnergyIP applications are Equipment Load Management and Grid Data Vault.
- Fusesaver, a new class of intelligent, compact and low cost single-phase circuit breakers that minimizes lost customer minutes by protecting lateral line fuses from blowing on transient faults.
