Over the past 3 years in France, a large amount of innovation has been invested in smart grid in France and there are something like 125 projects now under way,Laurent Schmitt, VP Smart Grid Solutions at Alstom Grid, revealed in a panel at the Engerati studio at European Utility Week 2014.
One of the most innovative is the Nice Grid project, Gilles Rocchia, Marketing Director Strategic Marketing at Socomec, noted, stating that his company was actively involved in several areas. One of the most innovative of these is to run an islanded LV grid for up to five hours with solar PV and storage to test grid services such as peak reduction.
Christine Pellen, who is responsible for Smart Grids at the French TSO, RTE, concurred, commenting that the biggest challenge is to introduce new flexibilities into the energy system. An example is the smart substation project of Nice Grid.
All three panelists agreed on the importance of collaboration between energy market players in developing and testing new innovative smart grid technologies.
