Hybrid Solutions and Skills Transfer is Critical for Africa’s Power Sector

While Africa enjoys rich sources of renewable power, it is important to create a reliable source of energy by choosing a hybrid system.

Africa has realised the importance of adopting hybrid power solutions in order to attain a reliable power supply. This is according to Guillermo Elum, Sales and Marketing Director, Himoinsa, who spoke to Engerati at the Africa Energy Forum. While it is important to harness valuable and rich renewable energy sources for power, it is important that power sectors create the right mix of generation and integrate systems efficiently and effectively, explains Elum. He says, “Storage solutions are still rather difficult to deploy and therefore, it is important to combine technology and create a hybrid solution.”

Elum points out that Himoinsa has been working in the African sector for almost 10 years. He expands, “It is important for us that Africa receives the best available technology in order to harness natural resources and optimize their power consumption.” Another important factor is that the technology is environmentally and socially safe and friendly.

Skill transfer is taken very seriously by Himoinsa. While Himoinsa prefers to create a presence in a country so that it can maintain and service equipment, it works in; the company also trains the locals on how to use the deployed technology. “The idea is to eventually get these people trained well enough so that they can operate the equipment themselves.”

Elum concludes by pointing out that Africa is a large continent with large power needs. It is therefore filled with opportunities to develop a better power sector.
